FORMERLY USED DEFENSE SITES IN FLORIDA | By Fight for Zero

Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) were properties the Department of Defense (DOD) used for training and past activities. These sites are either under investigation or being cleaned up. This map shows areas where contamination is being remediated or munitions may remain on land from past activities.

FORMERLY USED DEFENSE SITE INVESTIGATION By Fight for Zero

In 2018, Fight for Zero's team did comprehensive work in bringing attention to homes built on top of a military landfill in the South Patrick Shores community next to Patrick Air Force Base in addition to our work with cancer cluster crowdsourcing, PFAS contamination, national collaborations, and hosting a community meeting for Erin Brockovich in Satellite Beach, Florida.

Our team spent weeks knocking on doors, gathering documents, photographing waste, recording videos, reaching out to Brockovich's team, organizing neighborhood meetings, consistently attending local Restoration Advisory Board meetings, educating representatives, sorting through archived newspapers, and unburying military debris. In recent years we have sent newsletters, knocked on doors, met with families, and communicated with the school board and city officials to encourage participation in the environmental investigation.
